ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has named Jan Harville of the University of Washington as the 2002 Division I Coach of the Year.
Harville led the Huskies' to a second-place finish at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships earlier this spring. Washington's 63 team points were just four fewer than first-place Brown (67 points). In the process, she coached the first varsity eight to its second consecutive national championship and the second varsity eight to its first national championship since 1994. The pair of national titles marked the first time UW won both the first varsity eight and second varsity eight events at the same national championships since 1987.
Harville, in her 15th season as the head coach at Washington, coached the Huskies' first varsity eight and second varsity eight to undefeated seasons in 2002. The crews earned victories at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Windermere Cup, the Pac-10 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships, along with dual race wins over Wisconsin, Washington State and Oregon State.
The National Coach of the Year award, selected by the membership of the CRCA, is intended to recognize a coach who has experienced outstanding success during the season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled their team's potential and/or demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach. The coach must also be a current member of the CRCA.
