I am deeply sorry to report that Boston College lightweight men's eight bowman Scott Laio passed away after winning the event at the Dad Vails in Philadelphia this afternoon. Shortly after crossing the line, just as the crew reached the railroad bridge, Laio collapsed and passed out; his boatmate Ned Borgman very quickly realized what was happening, and began truly heroic efforts to revive Scott, an effort that was continued on the dock at the grandstands by EMT's. His parents and coaches accompanied Scott to the hospital, but he was unable to be revived, and died today. The latest reports as of 9:30pm say Scott suffered a heart attack.
Here is the wire story: Boston College rower dies after competition. The report incorrectly puts him in the seven seat; Scott was rowing bow.
If I hear more, I will report it here when I can; most importantly, I am sure I speak for the entire rowing community in sending Scott's family, friends, and teammates our absolute deepest condolences.
