Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) today announced that Donna Atkinson of Victoria, B.C., will be its new Executive Director.
"Donna brings to RCA valuable experience in management of many different types of projects and organizations, enormous energy, and an extremely well-regarded reputation of 'getting things done,'" says Rowing Canada Aviron President Brenda Liski. "I look forward to working with her as we enter our new quadrennial and achieving great success both on and off the water."
Ms. Atkinson has more than 15 years of senior management experience in sport and recreation, municipal government, and health care. This includes prior positions as Program Director of the Canadian Amateur Diving Association, Program Director of the Alberta Water Polo Association and, Director - Parks, Recreation & Community Development for the City of Victoria. Most recently, she was an Associate in Benchmark Consulting Group, an organizational and leadership development group working in the public and non-profit sectors.
Ms. Atkinson's background includes community and economic development; planning and policy development; communications and issues management; strategic planning; conflict resolution; service delivery and operational reviews, program development and event planning; facility management and social marketing and fundraising. She has a Bachelor Degree in Social Sciences with a major in Recreation from the University of Ottawa, and completed the Masters program in Health Science Administration from Central Michigan University.
"It is a privilege to become part of such an accomplished organization," says Atkinson of her new role. "I look forward to helping grow the sport of rowing in Canada and supporting our teams and athletes on the road to more gold in 2012 and beyond."
RCA is a nonprofit organization recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in Canada. RCA represents registered members at all levels, and administers the successful National Team program that won four medals at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games.
Ms. Atkinson will be based at Rowing Canada's head office in Victoria, B.C., and will commence work with RCA beginning at the April board meeting this weekend.
Outgoing Executive Director Ian Moss, who joined RCA in 2005, announced earlier this year that he is moving to England to take the post of Performance Director with Badminton England and UK Badminton.
