The same lineup that represented Canada in rowing's women's eight event in Beijing this summer won the Championship Women's Eights today at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston (www.hocr.org). "It was awesome, just a great race," said Darcy Marquardt, a two-time (2004 and 2008) Olympian competing in her seventh Head of the Charles. "The chemistry we had as a crew all summer was felt today and (coxswain) Lesley steered an incredible course. It was very exciting." The Charles River course is approximately three miles around bouys and through bridges (compared with a straight 2000-metre Olympic distance). The eight's winning time was 16:02.507. The women's eight, representing the London (Ontario) Training Centre, is Jane Rumball of Fredericton, N.B., Darcy Marquardt of Richmond, B.C,. Buffy Williams of St. Catharines, Ont., Romina Stefancic of Victoria, B.C., Ashley Brzozowicz of Toronto, Ont., Sarah Bonikowsky of Orangeville, Ont., Andréanne Morin of Montreal, Que., Heather Mandoli of Kelowna, B.C., and Lesley Thompson-Willie of London, Ont. The eight finished a very close fourth at the Games and this is the first regatta as a crew since the Olympics. The University of Washington won the Championship Eights men's event in 14:28.087 Rowing Canada's London Training Centre's Championship Fours entry of Laura Comeau of St. Catharines, Ont., Sarah Waterfield of Kingston, Ont., Elizabeth McCord of Toronto, Ont., Sandra Kisil of Ancaster, Ont., and Stephanie Morrison of Nelson, B.C. finished second in 18:02.729. Comeau represented Canada as the coxswain of the Paralympic four this year in China. In first place was Roforeningen Kvik (Denmark) in 18:01.011. Don Rowing Club (Mississauga, Ont.) was 10th in the same event. The Peterborough Rowing Club's entry was eighth in the Championships Fours for men in 16:51.971. This year the two-day Head of the Charles welcomed more 8,000 rowers. Other notable Canadian results (Sunday): •Brock University (St. Catharines, Ont.) was first in the Lightweight Fours for women in 18:34.877; the Don Rowing Club (Mississauga) was second in the same event for men. •Lindsay Forget of Western (London, Ont) was fourth in the lightweight women's singles; Jenny Hogsden of Queen's University (Kingston, Ont.) was the next-best Canadian finisher in sixth. •Queen's University was second in the Lightweight Eights for women in 17:08.053; and Queen's also took second place in the same event for men with a time of 14:58.958. Princeton University was first in 14:46.757. Brock University was 12th. •Brock University was third in the Collegiate Eights for men in 15:13.429, and was fifth in the Collegiate Eights for women. •The Ottawa Rowing Club (Melanie Bryce) was seventh in the Masters Singles for women; Toronto's Hanlan Boat Club (Eric Szonyi) was ninth in the same event for men. •The South Niagara Rowing Club (Welland, Ont.) was fourth in the Youth Eights for Women (St. Catharines Rowing Club was sixth in the same event); Brentwood College (British Columbia) was 11th in the Youth Eights for men in 15:58.807. •Canada came up big in the Youth Fours for men - St. Catharines Rowing Club was first (17:16.152); South Niagara Rowing Club was second and Upper Canada College (Toronto) was fourth out of 70 boats. South Niagara was sixth in the Youth Fours for women in 19:54.79. •Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, represented by 71-year-old John Helliwell, was fourth in the Senior-Veteran Singles Men (70+) in 22:16.806 •St. Catharines Rowing Club was 10th in the Youth Women's Doubles. •Montreal Rowing Club (Herb Treffeisen) was eighth in the Veteran Singles (60+) for men. The Don Rowing Club (Lynda Dundas) was 14th in the Veteran Singles (60+) for women.
