Andrew and Tricia Mangan, an inspirational pair of siblings from a family of 8 rowers, are set to team up and participate in the Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) in the Mixed Inclusion Doubles event on October 21st. Andrew, a seasoned rower, and Tricia, a two-time alpine skiing Olympian, are leveraging their excitement for sport to raise awareness for an important cause close to Andrew's heart, the High Fives Foundation, and the power of positivity and perspective.
Andrew rowed competitively in high school, including stroking his high school 8 at the HOCR, before he suffered a spinal cord injury in 2016 which initially left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Through perseverance, optimism and an amazing community supporting him, he propelled himself back into the sport he loves. His recovery journey led him to High Fives Foundation, a non-profit aimed at aiding individuals with spinal cord injuries to return to the outdoors and sports.
The duo will be racing in a High Fives Foundation Uni, to raise awareness about spinal cord injuries and the foundation's mission to cultivate positivity and community following life-altering injuries.
Currently on the US Rowing Para National Team for the second year as the PR1 single rower, Andrew recently finished 14th at World Championships and is now training in Austin, Texas, preparing for the Last Chance Regatta in Lucerne to qualify for the Paris Olympics next summer. Passionate about raising the bar in the ever-growing and competitive PR1 domain and coached by Sasha Bailey, Andrew is determined to close in on the front of the pack.
Andrew recently graduated from Stanford with a degree in Computer Science and Machine Learning and is the co-founder of PromptLoop, an AI-powered Data Research company he started with his older brother Peter. Andrew also enjoys spending time biking, skiing, and speaking at schools and corporate events about the power of positivity and perspective.
Tricia is a Dartmouth Engineering graduate and a 2x Olympian. She is currently competing on the FIS World Cup Speed Circuit this season as a member of the US Ski Team, after beginning her racing career at a small hill near Buffalo, NY and self-funding her World Cup racing for several years.
In line with her family's dual-sport spirit, Tricia enjoys rowing as a summertime cross-training activity and finds inspiration in her whole family, especially Andrew who constantly reminds her of the power of positivity, building a strong community, and that if you take obstacles one step at a time, anything is possible!
Tricia is passionate about using her platform to inspire young athletes, especially girls, to work hard at their goals and never stop believing in their potential. She is an author of a weekly Substack essay focusing on sharing personal experiences on overcoming adversity to encourage others to pursue their passions.
The Mangan siblings have raced together once before in 2017 with their parents and four other siblings in the Directors Challenge 8 Event to celebrate Andrew’s recovery. Andrew will also be defending his gold medal in the Mixed Inclusion Doubles event that he rowed in last year with their younger sister Mary Mangan, who will be competing this season with the Harvard Radcliffe Team.
From Andrew's resilient comeback to Tricia's nontraditional journey to two Olympics, the Mangan siblings hope to exemplify that with a positive attitude, determination, and a strong community, one can overcome any obstacle.
