The Head Of The Charles Regatta is one of Greater Boston’s biggest annual gatherings of international athletes. This year, nearly 1,600 boats representing 41 states (including Alaska and Hawaii) and 15 countries are rowing the legendary three-mile racecourse. More than 12% of all entries are registered from countries other than the United States. Approximately 1,000 international competitors are making their way to the Regatta from faraway places such as Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa.
With 7,500 athletes, roughly 250,000 spectators and more than 1,000 volunteers, the Head Of The Charles makes a major mark on area restaurants and retailers. Area hotels sell out months in advance to accommodate the thousands of people who travel to Boston to be part of the Regatta.
A recent preliminary study by McKinsey & Company reveals Head Of The Charles infuses as much as $26-million to the area by out-of-state visitors; the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts benefits as the state collects an estimated $2 to $3-million in tax revenues attributed to Regatta competitors, spectators, and volunteers.
Tapping into the affluent international audience HOCR attracts, Audi of America is showcasing their latest line of German-engineered vehicles at various Regatta venues on the riverbanks including Reunion Village, Rowing & Fitness EXPO, and the Weld Boathouse exhibit area. Audi is also launching its US premier of the new Q7 at the Head Of The Charles.
The Regatta weekend—which is always scheduled annually on the next-to-last weekend each October—also coincides with the seasonal peak fall foliage in New England. Many visitors extend their stay in the area well beyond the weekend to explore the region, which typically bursts with brilliant autumnal colors this time of year.
Head Of The Charles is indeed “the mecca” for hundreds of thousands of rowers and fans, making the Regatta truly “America’s Fall Rowing Festival.”™
