JUNIOR COACH OF THE YEAR
Derek Byrnes – Oakland Strokes
Derek has been the head coach and varsity women’s coach of the Oakland Stokes for the last 7-10 years. The Oakland Strokes won the USRowing Youth National Championships in the W8+ and LW8+. Men’s team coached by Jason Hilton under Derek’s oversight continually improved over the year with a gold in Regionals and silver at Youth Nationals.Tom Graves- Long Beach Junior Crew
Won gold at Youth Nationals in M8+- the first time LB Junior men have won a national title since 1984. Won the 2-, 4+ and 3V8 at SW Regionals, Helped to create a new competitive environment among the kids at LBJC. Helped mentor kids with their studies in school and helped get the team on the right path to eating well and good nutrition.Mark Grinberg- Arlington Belmont Crew
Guided the Arlington Belmont Crew men to two consecutive Massachusetts team points state championships, along with becoming the first ever Massachusetts public school to qualify two 8+ s for USRowing Youth Nationals. His men’s 1V8+ also won the Textile River Regatta and MPSRA fall states, just four years after the team had a mere six members.Peter Sharis- Y-Quad Cities
As head coach he helped two Y-Quad Cities athletes, Elizabeth Sharis in 1x and Emily Delleman in 4x, earn spots on the 2014 US Jr. National Team. Team won gold in W4x and W1x, and bronze in LW2x at Youth National Championships. Helped Quad Cities break U19 Mixed Small Team 100,000 meter erg record.Liz Trond- Connecticut Boat Club
Led Connecticut Boat Club to five wins, including a second place, and two third place finishes at the Northeast Junior Championships. Women’s 8+ won silver at the USRowing Youth Nationals. As head coach for the junior national team, coordinated all levels of camps, directly coached the four to a silver medal Junior Worlds
