Lots of teams hitting the road these days for a full spring's worth of racing, so here's a hack to help get your gear where it is going: The Inner-Tube Rigger Tie.
We spotted these at the Charles, fresh off a cross-country trip from the Pacific Northwest, and we do love a clever bit of repurposing here at Rowing Hack HQ.
We are also big fans of any trick that keeps folks from getting riggers gunky with tape residue, or using disposable tape or wrap when there's lots of stuff out there that can get reused every trip.
An added bonus: using inner-tubes like this actually hearkens back to the original rigger "bungees"--the ones born in the depths of a Wisconsin winter back in the early 1990s, as detailed in our full history of the ur-bungee a few years back.
If your boathouse has a few cyclists, then you can source discarded inner-tubes pretty easily, and the fact that the old tubes need a patch won't stop them from doing this work of keeping your riggers bundled up tight in the trailer.
You'll be keeping some rubber out of the local landfill of course, and maybe even save yourself a last-minute, mid-trailer-loading trip to Home Depot for more bungees or tarp ties.
Ultimately, of course, bungees get stretched out over time or just plain disappear between unloadings and loadings--especially over a long off-season--so having a ready supply of something you can get for free that will do the trick is just good hacking.
Whether you use tarp ties you bought, rigger wrap you "borrowed" from the athletic trainer, tape (if you have to), or even some cool rigger straps that you hacked up after reading them about right here, keeping your riggers bundled and easy to transport is all part of the road-trip drill.
Do you have a good trick for traveling or trailer loading like this one? If so, share your ideas--and hacks--in the comments below.
If you have a great rowing hack to suggest for future inclusion, then please send it to us and we will feature your idea in a future column.
