The 2009 edition of the San Diego Crew Classic(r) kicks off Saturday morning, and it's shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the regatta's history. The Copley and Jessop-Whittier Cups lead the way with the Copley featuring nine men's crews ranked in the preseason top 20 and the Jessop-Whittier with seven ranked women's crews.
There are two heats in each event, with the top three advancing to Sunday's final.
COPLEY CUP
Both heats will be very fast with every crew capable of snagging one the three qualifying spots.
Heat A - #1 Washington, #4 Brown, #7 Harvard, #13 Syracuse, #15 Oregon State, Purdue
Heat B - #3 California, #5 Stanford, #10 Yale, #9 Princeton, Michigan
JESSOP-WHITTIER CUP
The first heat looks to have the most top end speed but is not nearly as deep as the second heat. The second heat features, the #11, #12, #13, and #15 ranked crews racing for the three spots in the final.
Heat A - #4 Washington, #6 Michigan, #18 Oregon State, Notre Dame, Iowa, UC-Davis
Heat B - #11 USC, #12 Washington State, #15 Wisconsin, #13 UCLA, Miami
Conditions for the heats are forecast for sunny and 56 degrees with calm wind. The crews will be racing against an outgoing tide which may provide favorable water for lanes 1 and 2.
Friday at Mission Bay was pretty standard for the regatta, with hundreds of competitors milling about the packed in shells. A large portion of the crews were sporting customized shirts and row2k even spotted some zebra print uni's.
Athletes on the course dealt with a pretty strong tail wind and some occasional white caps. In the afternoon, an unexpected wake rolled across the course when a police boat chased down jet-ski towing a waterskier down lane seven. No word on whether a ticket was issued.
