At the top of the morning news at the EARC Sprints is the dead heat in Heat 1 of the Men's JV 8...Navy and Wisconsin absolutely deadlocked at 5:48.919. This dead heat is the real deal...the folks from Powerhouse Timing are on-site, taking high res finish line photos (take a look here), and their equipment is accurate down to the 1/1000 of a second, but the tightness of this particular result has defeated even the technology: the one-pixel line on the finish photo is too wide to show any real difference in the crews. (I am informed that the width of the line on the photo is equal to 4/10,000s of a second, yeesh). The end result is the only just one in these circumstances: both the Wisco and the Navy JVs advance, we'll have a 7-boat final this afternoon.
A breeze on the course produced some fast times this morning: in the Men's V8, Northeastern, the fastest qualifier, rowed just 4 seconds outside of the course record this morning, while the Cornell and Harvard Varsity Light eights, in separate heats, were one and two seconds slower than the existing course record respectively. As Quinsig breaks for lunch, the tailwind looks to be sticking around, so a few of these records may fall.
Coupla upsets on the day: BU squeaks by Navy in the Varsity Eight, claiming a spot in the Grand, while Yale knocks off a higher-seeded Cornell crew to advance. Qualifying under the category of "Gutsiest Row Up," the Navy 4V knocked off Harvard in the Lightweight 3V event, and will race with the Navy 3V in the Grand.
Hometown crew Holy Cross, participating in this regatta as a guest, as is their custom, recorded their best finish ever at this regatta. Racing in the Varsity Eight, Holy Cross qualified for the Petite Finals with a solid row.
Off to the finals; we'll run down the afternoon racing at the end of the day.
