Imagine your buddy has been far away on business, Antarctica say, he's back just in time for Sprints, and it's your job to explain to him who the favorites are this year.
"Well, Yale beat Navy at San Diego."
"Then, Princeton beat Columbia and Navy, and Harvard beat Georgetown."
"Then, Columbia beat Yale, Georgetown beat Princeton and Navy beat Harvard."
"And THEN, Harvard beat Yale and Princeton, and Georgetown beat Navy."
"Oh, and, Columbia beat Rutgers, MIT, Dartmouth, Cornell and Penn."
The tale of the tape for this year's Lightweight EARC Sprints is that it's all to play for going into May 11th. Each of the top 6 teams has at least one loss, and although Harvard is back at #1 in the most recent EARC poll, both Yale and Columbia seem poised to make the fight for the championship an epic one. Also sure to be in the mix is Navy, who have seemed to run up and down on the season: a sweep of Harvard on the Charles, followed by a loss to Georgetown the following weekend. Georgetown in turn followed up their win over Navy with the barest of victories over Delaware. In short, on a great day, Navy, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Georgetown, and Columbia all have a shot at the title by any account - and others might have an eye on it as well.
In the lower boats, Princeton's JV passed the last big test before Sprints with their half-length victory over Yale and Harvard in the Goldthwait Cup on April 26th. Yale's JV is quick, and not having the last week before Sprints off, as Harvard and Princeton did, may help the Eli gain just the fighting advantage they need. Navy's JV also has solid wins under their belt, and ought to push HYP for a spot on the podium, while Cornell could play the role of spoiler.
Yale's frosh have posted a clean slate in their spring racing, and go into Sprints with a justified #1 ranking, although both Penn and Rutgers came within 6 seats of Yale during their respective dual meets. An open-water win at HYPs was Yale's best result, while in the wings, Cornell, with wins over Penn and Harvard in the "plus" column to a loss to Princeton, will be looking to make a move on Sunday.
