In its enduring commitment to rowing and to offer a sterling regatta, the San Diego Crew Classic is proud to offer a number of events over the racing weekend to rowers, spectators, those who wish to learn more about the sport and those who wish to enjoy spectacular displays of athleticism.
As more attention and dollars are lavished upon college boathouses across the country, high schoolers have taken notice. They want to participate in a team sport that challenges them and push themselves to study at America's finest higher education institutions. For those who have embraced the sport in high school and want to continue rowing in college, the Crew Classic will hold its Crews to College event Friday afternoon.
High school rowers will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be recruited and what will be expected of them as collegiate rowers. A panel of more than 50 colleges and universities as well as former Olympians will lead discussions and field questions. Ticket price includes a pasta party dinner and more time learning from these coaches and elite athletes.
Perhaps no piece of literature has done more to popularize rowing than Daniel James Brown's "The Boys in the Boat." The Crew Classic is delighted to welcome the author to the regatta this year where he will be signing books, taking questions and posing for pictures at the merchandise tent. Many rowers are grateful to Brown for so eloquently articulating the life and mind of a rower, and those who stop by will have the opportunity to thank him in person.
In 2015, the rowing world said goodbye to one of its greatest pioneers, Joan Lind Van Blom. Joan was the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in rowing. An incredible rower and incredible woman, she was a champion of the sport, and her legacy will be remembered Sunday with a row by the 1984 Olympic quad.
No Crew Classic experience is complete without enjoying the regatta from the brunch tent. The Sunday morning showdowns of the Copley Cup and Jessup Whittier Cup can only be truly appreciated from the brunch tent’s magnificent vantage point. The sumptuous buffet, the sartorial splendor, the thrilling view – there simply is no other rowing experience like it.
The San Diego Crew Classic looks forward to welcoming rowers, their friends and family to what is sure to be a riveting regatta.
