Selection for the 2024 USA Olympic squad gets underway this week with the USRowing Winter Speed Order at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, FL. While no seats will be determined this week, it is an important race to rank the athletes going into the selection camp in March. There are currently 118 entries spread across the four events: M1x, W1x, M2-, and W2-.
The key prize on the line this week, is automatic entry to the March selection camp to the top three finishers in each event, but the overall finish order is one of the main criteria for discretionary selection to the camp.
The selection camp will take place in Sarasota from March 3-24 with no more than 48 athletes per gender taking part. There, a selection committee will nominate the best combination of athletes for the following boat classes: W2x, LW2x, W4-, M4-, W4x, M4x, W8+, and M8+. Discretionary invitations for the camp will be determined by performance at Speed Order, winter testing, and results at 2023 competitions.
Selection camp boats that are qualified for Paris are: W2x, LW2x, W4-, M4-, and W8+. The selected M8+ will advance directly to the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta (FOQR) in Lucerne, SUI on May 19-21. The selected W4x and M4x will advance to Olympic Trials.
Following selection camp, Olympic Trials will take place in Sarasota from April 2-7 for the following boat classes: W1x, M1x, W2-, M2-, M2x, LM2x, W4x, and M4x. The winners for W1x, W2-, and M2- will be nominated to the Olympic team since the USA qualified those events at the 2023 World Championships. The remainder, M1x, M2x, LM2x, W4x, and M4x will then need to race at FOQR. A top two finish there will be needed in each event to qualify for Paris.
