With just under three weeks to go, preparations for the Jr. World Championships are beginning in earnest. Junior crews from 50 countries are ramping up for the event in Duisburg, Germany.
Duisburg is not new to international racing at the highest level, hosting the World Championships in 1983 and an international regatta annually that has seen some fast racing over the years.
Host country Germany is one of the perennial favorites at this regatta, and with the home course advantage we can expect the natives to be racing with that extra shot of adrenaline in the last 250 meters.
Germany's success at this regatta stems from a meticulous identification and selection process that utilizes the latest advances in training metholodogies, sports science and biometric technologies, to name a few. But while this preparation has yielded admirable success, the Jr. Worlds are not without their cinderella stories; countries as diverse as Portugal, Switzerland and Estonia have claimed top honors, along with the usual rowing favorites from Australia, Italy and the US.
Because of the nature of Junior rowing, few teams know much about their opponents; it's a new bunch every year. But when racing starts on August 8th, the first wave of rowing's future stars will take to the waters of the Wedau, and for some this will mark the beginning of illustrious, even Olympian rowing careers.
Let the racing begin!
