The Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) announced today the retirement of Commissioner Gary Caldwell, effective December 31st, 2024.
As the parent organization of men's collegiate rowing in the United States, the IRA and its national championship regatta date back to 1895, making it the nation's oldest collegiate championship. Having been at the helm since 1998, Caldwell has had an incalculable impact on hundreds of coaches, thousands of athletes, and nearly all facets of the sport during his 26 years as commissioner. In his new role as Commissioner Emeritus, he'll work on growing the IRA's media footprint as it continues to expand its portfolio of championship broadcasts.
The Association is also pleased to announce that, effective immediately, Laura Kunkemueller will transition from Director of Officiating to the newly created Associate Commissioner position. Patrick Diggins, Regatta Director for the IRA and EARC Eastern Sprints, will take on additional responsibilities as Assistant Commissioner for Affiliate Championships, and will oversee the NIRC, NERC, and Women's Sprints regattas. Howard Meisner, longtime USRowing referee and former Northeast Regional Coordinator for USRowing's referee committee, has been appointed Director of Officiating.
