TOKYO 2020 RECAP
Germany was quickest off the line in Tokyo, holding a narrow lead over Great Britain, New Zealand, and the United States. The Kiwi eight started to move in the second quarter and hit the 1000 virtually level with the British and Germans before exploding to nearly a half length lead at the 1500. New Zealand won the gold, with Germany sprinting through Great Britain for the silver and the USA in 4th.
Watch the Olympic Final here, M8+ final starts around 2:44:00.
2022 SEASON RECAP
Great Britain has gone three for three in 2022, winning gold at World Cup I, World Cup III, and the European Championships. Germany has a new eight this year, and while they won World Cup II, they finished fourth at Euros and are making a couple of substitutions for Racice. The Dutch have performed well, taking two silver medals, and the Italians are prioritizing their eight this year, winning bronze in Munich for the European Championships. Additionally Australia has shown good speed, taking silver at the second and third World Cup stops.
USA PROSPECTS
The USA has rebuilt their men's eight in 2022, featuring a core of recently successful U23 talent, along with Olympians Liam Corrigan and Alex Karwoski. Half of the eight--Andrew Gaard, Chris Carlson, Pieter Quinton, and Michael Knippen--raced a four at World Cup II and had a strong bronze medal finish.
Those six are joined by Michael Clougher, who raced the 2018 M4- and 2017 M1x, and Nicholas Rusher, a recent Yale graduate and member of the 2021 USA U23 M8+ that won the silver. The coxswain is James Catalano, who coxed the USA U23 M4+ to a bronze medal in 2021.
While this specific lineup hasn't raced yet, a similar crew raced in the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley, losing to the British eight by three quarters of a length in the semifinals. A good result for this eight will be to make the final and be in the mix for the podium.
MEDAL PICKS
Great Britain are the favorites for gold, with the Dutch and Italians the most likely crews to grab the other two spots on the podium. USA and Australia will be strong and looking to push their way into the medals.
GOLD – GREAT BRITAIN
SILVER – THE NETHERLANDS
BRONZE - UNITED STATES
