TOKYO 2020 RECAP
China snuck out to an early lead over Germany, The Netherlands, and Poland, before breaking open water on the Germans at the halfway mark. At the 1500 meter mark, China had open water on Germany, who had taken a length over Poland and The Netherlands. China cruised to gold, with Poland in second, and Australia sprinting to third after a crab in the German quad with 100 meters to go.
Watch the Olympic Final here, W4x final starts around 2:44:00.
2022 SEASON RECAP
China continued their run in the women's quad with wins at World Cup II and World Cup III. While they had one new sculler in for both these wins, China will return to their lineup from Tokyo in Racice. They were followed in both those wins by Great Britain and The Netherlands. The British won the European Championship and finished second in Lucerne, while the Dutch won World Cup I and raced to the silver at Euros. The additional quads which won medals in 2022 were the Swiss, Ukrainians, and Italians.
USA PROSPECTS
The 2022 USA women's quad is a new lineup with all four scullers making their World Championship debut on the senior level. Emily Delleman and Emily Kallfelz raced as USA2 in the W2x event at World Cup II, coming in 5th and both have extensive Junior and U23 team experience: Delleman won two medals at the junior level (gold in 2016 JW2x and bronze in 2015 JW4x), and Kallfelz has three medals as the USA U23 W1x (2nd in 2019 and 2018, then 3rd in 2017), plus a bronze medal with Delleman in that 2015 JW4x.
They are joined by Maggie Fellows and Savannah Brija. Fellows' first international event was at World Cup II this spring, where she raced to 9th place in the W1x. Brija will be racing her first event for USA, having graduated from Ithaca College in 2019.
The quad will be looking to get good international racing experience in Racice, but will be hard pressed to make the A Final. A solid finish for USA would be in the top half of the B Final.
MEDAL PICKS
China are the favorites for gold, with Great Britain and The Netherlands the two crews most likely to make the podium. Then Ukraine, Australia, Poland, and Italy are the other quads which could challenge for a medal.
GOLD – CHINA
SILVER – GREAT BRITAIN
BRONZE - UKRAINE
