With just over a year until the start of the Tokyo Olympic Regatta and just over a month until the first qualification spots are on the line at the World Championships, here's an Olympic event breakdown on which Americans need to finish where and what spots are still up for grabs in the race to Tokyo.
WOMEN'S SINGLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – Kara Kohler has accepted the spot as the USA W1x for the 2019 World Championships following her win at Trials on April 21.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 9 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 29
COMMENTS – Kohler finished fourth in the women's single at the 2018 World Championships and fourth at World Cup II on June 23.
MEN'S SINGLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – Michael Knippen of Seattle Rowing Center won Trials on April 21 and accepted the spot. Then, on July 10, Knippen was part of the Penn AC Composite crew that won the men's quad trial. Knippen gave up his M1x spot and accepted a spot in the quad. Now, the men's single spot will be decided by a trial on August 7. See more info here.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 9 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 29
COMMENTS – At publication date, there were three singles entered for the M1x Trial August 7.
WOMEN'S PAIR
CURRENT STATUS – Megan Kalmoe and Tracy Eisser have accepted the spot as the USA W2- for the 2019 World Championships following their third place finish at World Cup II on June 23.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 11 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 13
COMMENTS – Kalmoe and Eisser won the silver medal at the 2017 World Championships but did not race in 2018 due to injury.
MEN'S PAIR
CURRENT STATUS – The two seats in the 2019 USA M2- will be determined at Trials on August 7.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 11 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 13
COMMENTS – In 2018, the USA M2- crew of Michael Colella and Anders Weiss finished 15th at the World Championships.
WOMEN'S DOUBLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – The Cambridge Boat Club double of Cicely Madden and Gevvie Stone has accepted the spot as the USA W2x for the 2019 World Championships following their win at Trials on May 19.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 11 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 13
COMMENTS – Madden and Stone defeated the long time USA W2x combination of Meghan O'Leary and Ellen Tomek at Trials, and then finished second at World Cup II on June 23.
MEN'S DOUBLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – The Penn AC double of Justin Keen and Erik Frid has accepted the spot as the USA M2x for the 2019 World Championships following their win at Trials on July 10.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 11 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 13
COMMENTS – Keen and Frid both raced in the 2018 USA men's quad that finished 11th at the World Championships.
WOMEN'S LIGHTWEIGHT DOUBLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – The Hydrow Composite double of Christine Cavallo and Michelle Sechser has accepted the spot as the USA LW2x for the 2019 World Championships following their win at Trials on May 19.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 7 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 18
COMMENTS – The new combination of Cavallo and Sechser raced to a sixth place finish at World Cup II on June 23. In 2018, Sechser finished fourth in the LW1x and Cavallo finished fourth in the LW4x.
MEN'S LIGHTWEIGHT DOUBLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – The Newport Composite double of Andrew Campbell and Nick Trojan has accepted the spot as the USA LM2x for the 2019 World Championships following their win at Trials on May 19.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 7 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 18
COMMENTS – Campbell and Trojan finished 15th at World Cup II on June 23. In 2018, Campbell won the bronze medal in the LM1x. Trojan's most recent world championship appearance was a tenth place finish in 2017, racing in the LM1x.
WOMEN'S FOUR
CURRENT STATUS – The women's four that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Championships will be named following the completion of the Princeton Selection Camp on July 28.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 8 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 10
COMMENTS – At the 2018 World Championships, the crew of Madeleine Wanamaker, Erin Boxberger, Molly Bruggeman, and Erin Reelick won the world title, defeating Australia by 1.5 seconds. During the 2019 World Cup circuit, the USA has raced five different lineups in the event, with the top performers winning silver at World Cup I, and finishing fourth at World Cup II.
MEN'S FOUR
CURRENT STATUS – The men's four that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Championships will be named following the completion of the Oakland Selection Camp on July 28.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 8 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 10
COMMENTS – At the 2018 World Championships, the crew of Alex Richards, Michael Clougher, Nick Mead, and Tim Aghai finished in 13th place. In 2019, the USA raced two entries at World Cup II, with the top crew of Alex Karwoski, Mike Di Santo, Andrew Reed, and Austin Hack finishing in fifth place.
WOMEN'S QUADRUPLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – The women's quad that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Championships will be named following the completion of the Princeton Selection Camp on July 28.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 8 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 10
COMMENTS – During the 2018 World Championships, the crew of Elizabeth Sonshine, Emily Huelskamp, Maureen McAuliffe, and Kara Soucek raced to a sixth place finish. At World Cup III, the line-up of Lily Keane, Heidi Robbins, Maureen McAuliffe, and Kristina Wagner also finished in sixth place.
MEN'S QUADRUPLE SCULLS
CURRENT STATUS – The Penn AC composite quad of John Graves, Tristan Amberger, Michael Knippen, and Greg Ansolabehere has accepted the spot as the USA M4x for the 2019 World Championships following their win at Trials on July 10.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 8 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 10
COMMENTS – The Penn AC quad raced together at World Cup II on June 23, and finished in eighth place.
WOMEN'S EIGHT
CURRENT STATUS – The women's eight that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Championships will be named following the completion of the Princeton Selection Camp on July 28.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 5 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 7
COMMENTS – The USA are the defending world champions in the event and have won the title 12 of the last 13 years. In 2019, the USA raced the line-up of: Kristine O'Brien, Meghan Musnicki, Brooke Mooney, Gia Doonan, Dana Moffat, Felice Mueller, Erin Reelick, Olivia Coffey, and Katelin Guregian at World Cup II and finished in second place to Australia.
MEN'S EIGHT
CURRENT STATUS – The men's eight that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Championships will be named following the completion of the Oakland Selection Camp on July 28.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARD – Top 5 at 2019 World Championships
TOTAL OLYMPIC ENTRIES - 7
COMMENTS – In 2018, the crew of Alex Karwoski, Glenn Ochal, Tom Peszek, Tom Dethlefs, Conor Harrity, Mike Di Santo, Andrew Reed, Patrick Eble, and Julian Venonsky finished in fourth place, just 0.2 seconds out of silver. The eight has yet to make an appearance in 2019.
