Three of the four remaining unnamed spots on the 2007 US Rowing World Championships team were named Saturday morning after a time trial to determine whether the crews could meet the time standard. Both trials and camp boats must meet the standard, and the morning saw two trials boat (the light men's eight and the men's single) and two camp boats (the men's four and eight) take a shot at the standard. Three of the four made the standard; only men's single trials winner Warren Anderson did not meet the standard, and will not be named to the team.
The results: Men's eight went 5:32, standard is 5:37 (Marcus McElhenney, Dan Walsh, Steve Coppola, Josh Inman, Brett Newlin, Pat O'Dunne, Wyatt Allen, Brody Buckland, Alex Hearne) Men's four went 5:55.89, standard is 6:06 (Hoopman, Bryan Volpenhein, Giuseppe Lanzone and Matt Schnobrich) Light men's eight went 5:40.70, standard is 5:42 (Leigh Heymann, Will Daly, John Nichols, Andrew Diebold, Jeff Forrester, Greg Ruckman, Tyler Resch, Gavin Frase and Tim Larson). Men's 1x Warren Andersen went 7:02.53, time standard is 6:54
The format can be particularly tough in the singles events; if your speed is close to the standard, but you don't get to row in favorable conditions during the five-day trials, it can be tough to turn around and make the standard with no time off after winning the trial; Anderson's fastest time this week was 7:01. After a one-hour delay to let the light morning winds accumulate some direction and velocity, the crews raced head-style every few minutes in a cross tailwind.
So ends the US trials for 2007; thanks for watching on row2k!
