Set in a classic US trials tableau – utter quiet, and exactly one spectator on the far shore – seven heats of singles raced off this morning in order to send ten scullers to tonight's repechages. All others advance to tomorrow morning's semi. Events contested were the men's heavy single, and men's and women's light singles.
The closest qualifying margin of the day was less than a second, the distance between Gabe Winkler and Jamie Schroeder in the men's single, with Gabe coming out on the positive end of the margin, and Jamie headed to the reps. After that, very comfortable margins of six seconds or more separated advancers from reps-bound scullers; the closest winning margin was about a length, and that was two scullers on cruise control.
All that to say that little can be predicted from this morning's racing; we certainly haven't seen the heat from the top few scullers in any of the categories. We should know more after tomorrow morning's racing, when the semis slice the field in each event down to the top four that will race in the first final on Saturday.
The favorite in the men's single would have to be Wyatt Allen, who won the National Selection Regatta in June. Had Wyatt been able to make the time standard by June 20, he would have been named the single sculler; he was unable to do so, and so the event went to a full trials this weekend.
In the light women's single, Marika Page posted the fastest time of the morning, but despite a massive lead (23 seconds at the finish), Marika definitely appeared to have rowed hard all the way to the line while other heat winners seemed to be spending as little energy as possible, so the times may not tell the whole story. In the light men's single, it would be impossible to call a favorite based on the heats alone; your guess is as good as mine, and I was there.
Reps for the three singles take place tonight, with semis to follow tomorrow morning. A total of twelve boat classes will be determined during the weekend (men's single, light men's and women's singles, light men's and women's quads, men's and women's pairs,
light men's pair, men's coxed pair, women's four, men's coxed four, and light men's eight); all other events are straight finals without qualifying heats. The best-of-three finals format starts Saturday morning for all events.
