The Austrian lightweight four scratched prior to competition due to a positive drug test for three members of the crew in their own program's drug-testing program. I believe the positive test was for anabolic steroids. For the complete story, see Austrian LW's Test Positive.

The racing schedule for the rest of the regatta has been adjusted to move all the c and d finals to friday, so that only A and B finals take place on Friday. As a result, every event that has a semi raced today - tomorrow is reps and C-D semis. i guess it's all about a TV deal for the weekend - they needed to get the lower level finals off the weekend schedule. long day today - 9:30-3 on 5' centers!

The Chinese Six - visa problems
Before the start of racing, the Chinese eight had two members of their crew missing due either to visa problems or illness, I haven't been able to find out for sure, and they rowed a six for several practices. During the leadup to the racing, the regatta organizers were testing the announcing setup, and used the Chinese crew to practice announcements: "The Chinese six is coming back on the field; the Chinese six is moving - the Chinese six is in the lead!"

Questionable announcer's call of the day yesterday (from among a few, apparently), in the moments before the first heat of the women's quad: "This is the event of the Amazons..."

Simon Carcagno was voted most likely to stealth into Italian team by some photographers on the starting pontoon - the shades and three-day growth being his admission ticket. Mike Altman was not (although he could probably walk into the Irish camp unchallenged). Photo of the crew

Coach Nash is prepared - he has programs, wrenches, even taped taped to his bike.

There are three rowers from Columbia University lightweights in the LM4- from Serbia-Montenegro; I believe the SCG heavyweight spare is also a Lion.

Concept 2 unveiled their Model D erg yesterday; the primary changes are in the electronics (little boat races, a force curve, recordable workouts), the wheel and fan (quieter), and the handle (bent downward at a 10 degree angle to approximate the angle of a sculling handle). Here are a couple photos:

The Italian police (photo) manning the launch boats on the lake are, shall we say, extremely scantily clad. Best assessment by an unnamed coach: "I'd hate to see them pull out their guns."

The Egyptian pair all paddled down the course; they're doubling up in the eight, so I'm guessing that the schedule change that put both the pair and the eight reps on the same day, which occurred only this past week, forced them to conserve themselves as much as possible for today's eight rep.
On the other hand, their four, who are also doubling up, gave it a run this morning, but finished in third position, out of the A/B semis.
Ultimately, after leading the heat to the 1500 on Monday, the Egyptian 8 trailed to the 1500 today, then sprinted through to take the second semi qualifying position. Early speed one day, then late speed the next - you might call them Egyptian magicians.

Low Raters of the Day
In winning their rep, the Aussie LM2x crossed the finish line at 24 spm.

Which fans were most obvious? The US folks did their usual USA USA chant, while the supporters Aussies ALL wore green, white and gold, but, not to be outdone by their North American neighbors or Commonwealth partners, the Canadians seemed to get the edge with the use of an Indian drum and a couple new chants of their own. The Canadians take the upper hand for noisiness and spectacle from the americans and aussies - go figure.
