The Austrian lightweight four scratched prior to competition due to a positive drug test for three members of the crew in their own program’s drug-testing program. I believe the positive test was for anabolic steroids.
Statement of the Austrian Rowing Federation
A press conference was held this morning in Vienna, Austria, following the announcement of one positive doping case in the Austrian Athletic Federation and of three positive doping cases in the Austrian Rowing Team.
Dr. Karl Heinz Demel, chairman of the Austrian anti-doping committee has declared that on the basis of the very small amount of prohibited substance above the allowed limits, these four cases can only be due to contamination in nutritional supplements.
The contaminated product has already been identified with near certainty to be the same for all four cases.
FISA Statement
The Austrian Rowing Federation confirms that three Austrian rowers have tested positive for a prohibited substance from competition by FISA as soon as the result was known on August 19. 2003.
On the evening of August 19, FISA ordered a surprise test for all remaining members of the Austrian team and all tests were negative.
