The United States junior women's four won its opening heat and advanced directly to the final Wednesday on the first day of junior competition at the 2000 FISA Junior and Non-Olympic Senior World Rowing Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Four U.S. senior boats also advanced out of the repechages on Wednesday. The senior non-Olympic events began Tuesday, while the junior events got started today.
The junior women's four of Missy Fiesler (Jacksonville, Fla.), Deborah Dryer (Cincinnati, Ohio), Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), and Nicole Ginn (Ft. Wright, Ky.) clocked a 6:50.78 in the second heat to defeat Australia by more than 10 seconds and advanced directly to Saturday's final. The Australian crew stroked a 7:01.50. The U.S. crew's time was the fastest of the day, as Germany won the other heat in a time of 6:58.37.
Fiesler, Dryer, Davies, and Ginn then joined the five other members of the junior women's eight for its heat. The crew, which also includes coxswain Shaina Kennedy (Seattle, Wash.), Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.), Sam Magee (Simsbury, Conn.), Teresa Oja (Sandy, Ore.), and Laura Terheyden (Colma, Calif.), finished second, clocking a 6:25.99 to Germany's 6:24.43. The crew now will compete in Thursday's repechage, or second-chance race, for the right to race in the final.
The junior men's eight also finished second in its heat. The crew of coxswain Mark Albert (Worcester, Mass.), Eric Davidson (Berkeley, Calif.), Mark Hall (Southport, Conn.), Sam Cates (Portland, Ore.), John Durham (Midland, Texas), Ray Hohenstein (Springfield, Va.), Will Herter (Madison, Conn.), Alex Binkley (Cambridge, Mass.), and Tim Dittman (Malvern, Pa.) clocked a 5:50.40 to finish 4.44 seconds behind Germany. Great Britain won the other heat in a time of 5:53.21. The crew also will compete in Thursday's repechage for the right to race in the final.
Junior men's single sculler Shane O'Mara (Tampa, Fla.) and the junior men's pair with coxswain also finished second in their heats. O'Mara stroked a 7:21.54 to finish behind the Swiss sculler, while the pair with coxswain finished in a time of 7:16.22, 4.62 seconds behind the German crew. Both O'Mara and the pair with coxswain will compete in Thursday's repechages.
The junior women's pair and the junior men's double sculls finished fourth in their heats, while the junior men's four with coxswain finished fifth. All three crews will compete Thursday in the repechages.
In the repechages of the senior non-Olympic events, the men's pair with coxswain won its race in a time of 7:03.42 to advance to Sunday's final. The crew of coxswain Nick Anderson (Omaha, Neb.), Kurt Borcherding (Madison, Wis.) and Matt Guerrieri (Egg Harbor, N.J.) defeated Italy by 1.1 seconds to take the repechage.
The women's four and men's lightweight quadruple sculls finished second in their repechages and advanced to Sunday's finals as well. The women's four clocked a 6:42.04 to finish 2.29 seconds behind the Netherlands. The men's lightweight quad stroked a 5:59.80 to finish 0.3 seconds behind Portugal.
Men's lightweight single sculler Marcus Millard (Atlanta, Ga.) also finished second in his repechage and advanced to Friday's semifinal. Millard stroked a 6:59.94 to finish 0.18 seconds behind Denmark.
The men's lightweight pair finished fourth in its repechage, failing to advance.
The 2000 FISA Junior and Non-Olympic Senior World Rowing Championships continue Thursday with repechages in the junior events, while semifinals in all events take place Friday. Finals in the junior events will be held Saturday, while finals in the senior events will be held Sunday. In the Olympic year, the Olympic Games serve as the world championships for all Olympic-class boats.
