The United States will enter 18 crews in the 2000 FISA World Junior and Non-Olympic Senior Rowing Championships. Held on Jarun Lake in Zagreb, Croatia, racing starts on August 1 with heats and ends on August 6 with finals. As this is an Olympic year, only non-Olympic senior boat classes will be raced. A full slate of junior competition is scheduled.
A total of 1,137 competitors from 50 nations will take part in the regatta. Of those, 401 rowers will compete in the senior boat classes, while 664 will battle it out for the junior titles.
The U.S. will field entries in each of the 10 senior events. This includes the men's four with coxswain, women's four, men's pair with coxswain, lightweight men's and women's pair, lightweight men's and women's single, lightweight men's and women's quad, and the lightweight men's eight. Marc Millard (Atlanta, Ga.) will represent the U.S. in the men's lightweight single, the event that has attracted the most boat entries with 25. Lisa Schlenker (Portland, Ore.) will go against 18 other women in the lightweight single, aiming to improve upon her silver-medal performance from 1999. The U.S. will be defending a total of five gold medals in the non-Olympic boat classes from 1999, namely the men's four with coxswain, men's pair with coxswain, women's lightweight pair, women's lightweight quad, and the men's lightweight eight.
The U.S. Junior National Team will be competing in eight of the 14 junior championship events. Americans will row in the men's and women's eight, men's four with coxswain, women's four, men's pair with coxswain, women's pair, men's single, and men's double. The junior women's eight won the only American medal of last year's world championship campaign, finishing second to the Romanian crew. Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Deborah Dryer (Cincinnati, Ohio) return from last year's silver-medal eight. Yvonneke Stenken, Evan Wilson, and Sam Cates are the other returning members from the 1999 U.S. Junior National Team.
Finals for the junior boat classes will be raced on Saturday, August 5, and finals for the non-Olympic classes will be raced on Sunday, August 6.
