Australia: 6:31.65 Elisabeta Lipa won her 5th Olympic Gold Medal in this race. Georgeta Damian-Andrunache also doubled up with Viorica Susanu to win her 4th Olympic Gold Medal and Susanu's 3rd Olympic Gold Medal. This race is also infamously known for Sally Robbins (6 seat of the Australian W8+) "Lie back" incident. At about 1500m Sally Robbins started to have a panic attack which ceased by throwing away her and "lying back". This was a mental problem not a physical problem which some have perceived it to be.
