2021 Outlook - "The guys are ready to work hard and to go for whatever challenge is ahead. Plan is to have our most competitive varsity boat yet and make as big an impression as we can at the biggest regattas being held. We just want the biggest regattas being held!"

2020 Outlook - "After last year’s breakthrough in time, posting a sub 6.00 minute at Dad Vail for first time, the challenge is to move up to a new level of speed to reach the higher level finals. From the squad, build a four that will be in the mix at the 2020 IRA National Championship."

- Lightweight 4 - Grand Finals at Vails, raced at IRAs
- Quad - 3rd at Vails
Returning Varsity 8+ Athletes - 3
2019 Seniors - 4
2019 Outlook - "Our goal is still the same as last year: Dad Vail Gold. As we get on the water even earlier this year, we’re looking to sharpen our tech and gain speed in any way we can. The plan now is to start competing with Heavyweight and Lightweight 8's at Vails and the lightweights are certainly looking to breakthrough with an automatic qualifier for the IRA. With a new coach and a passionate group of men ready to work, this is a goal within reach."
-Director of Rowing, David Patterson
Head Coach - Charles Huthmaker, 2nd year

2018 Outlook - "Team target is always Dad Vail Gold, if not in the short run then certainly the long run. Athletes have done their winter grind. 2k PRs have been set. We are on the water in February (which is not the norm for early morning practices in the Northeast). Want to challenge for a top 12 position in the varsity four at the IRA."
-Head Coach Charles Huthmaker

- 2nd Varsity 8 - 2nd at MAAC
- Varsity 4 - MAAC Champs, semis at Vails
Returning Varsity 8+ Athletes - 4
2017 Seniors - 3
2017 Outlook - "Last year saw Fairfield represented at the IRA for the first time in school history. The performance resembled a crew suffering a bit of shock and awe at the magnitude of the competition arena they found themselves in. While humbling, it still proved a great learning experience and the plan is to return sharper and better prepared to race against the college elites. With a new coach and a team in the process of a rebuild with plenty of young guys needing support, a great weight of responsibility is being shouldered by our seniors and juniors but they understand what they need to do and are ready to help the program continue to develop."
-Head Coach Charles Huthmaker
Head Coach - David Patterson, 9th year
2015 Finish
- Varsity 8 - Won Iona Invite, Sacred Heart Invite, made semifinals at Dad Vails
Returning Varsity 8+ Athletes - 7
2016 Seniors - 3
2016 Outlook - "The spring semester will be a great unknown. With Coach McCarron on board the men’s team will have been put through their most demanding training schedule yet but it has proven to be too demanding for some not used to working this hard for their sport while balancing all their other commitments. The squad is battling inner demons this indoor season trying to resolve the issue of how much they really want to be competitive. There is no comfort zone for anyone and the challenges are great. If our leaders lead, our athletes stick to the program and our coaches coach there is no reason that our men’s varsity eight will not develop in to the fastest in school history."
-Head Coach David Patterson
Head Coach - David Patterson, 8th year
2014 Finish
- Varsity 8 - Iona Invite Champ, Sacred Heart Champ, Spring Metro Champ, Grimaldi Cup Champ
Returning Varsity 8+ Athletes - 7
2015 Seniors - 6
2015 Outlook - "After the most successful spring season in 2014 with 3 varsity eight victories, performances slumped at the business end of the season at MAAC Championship and Dad Vail Regatta as our competitors all got quicker and we failed to find another gear. However the fall of 2014 saw our most successful fall season ever, helped by contributions from some new freshman talent. The challenge is to start fast in March and finish faster in May, building on the platform of the past calendar year."

2021 Outlook - "Not a unique status but having not raced since November 2019 and still working with typical COVID restrictions, we have three time frames. Our focus is using February on land to prepare to get on the water in March. Weather permitting in March we get the team on one page with some learning to row, some learning to row better and others improving their ability to row with others. In April our focus is on getting on the race course safely and building competitiveness. A conference championship in May will be the icing on the cake. While we have a short-term focus on making the most of the season ahead, the long-term focus is having a great experience, remembering why we love the sport and gearing everyone to be excited to come back and do it all over again in the fall."

2020 Outlook - "Once again, challenged to overcome the clash between graduation and conference championship, our freshmen and sophomores will make up the majority of our championship team in the middle of May. The difference is our pool of talent available from freshman class all the way through to the senior class will be a stronger, fitter and faster with the aim of working our way back up the conference rankings albeit the challenge from our conference rivals never gets easier!"

2019 Outlook - "With the conference championship landing on the same day as graduation and only 2 seniors committing to making themselves available for the championship race from a projected 14 from last year’s junior class we have found ourselves in a challenging situation. There is potential in the group and without question, given how young the team is, we are definitely only going to get faster as the season continues. This is probably not going to be the year that we look to push on to an elevated conference position and we will have an immense battle just to preserve our current position as the leaders of the chasing pack to break into the top three of Jacksonville, Marist and Canisius. The challenge being made even more of a battle with a resurgent Manhattan program that had a break out fall season. I think there will be immense battles all the way down the course in all races at this year’s MAAC Regatta. The challenge is there and it’s going to be FUN!"

2018 Outlook - "Big change in personnel from spring of 2017 with 7 students graduated, 4 students abroad in the spring and a transfer out due to change in major. With big change comes big opportunity for a bunch of returners and new members. With youth and inexperience, spring 2018 promises to be a huge adventure with a guarantee that we will finish off the season a lot faster than when we start. The last time the squad was this ‘fresh’ was the spring of 2013 which ended pretty well for us and inspires the current team tremendously."

2017 Outlook - "After a roller coaster ride of performances and results in the fall plus the disappointment of not getting an entry to the Head of the Charles everyone is keen and committed to taking the best parts of our autumn races and learn from our mistakes to put together a run of quality effort towards the peak that is the MAAC Championship in the middle of May. The MAAC has been improving in leaps and bounds every year since automatic qualification began and we are focused on being a recognized program at the top end of the conference which means we too have to keep improving or we will get left behind. While we have kept traditional races in our schedule, racing conference rivals Sacred Heart, Iona and Manhattan and attending the Spring Metropolitan Regatta we have added a fun early season dual with Smith College, we will return to the intense battle that is the Knecht Cup and have accepted the challenge of taking on the Black Rock Cup in Buffalo hosted by Canisius which will see 4 of the top 5 programs from last year’s MAAC Championship do battle in a double dual towards the end of April – unless it’s still frozen up North!"

2016 Outlook - "The squad has some outstanding seniors looking to close their collegiate career in style having started it off winning the varsity 8 MAAC title along with an undefeated novice four season in 2013 (including Knecht Cup and Dad Vail gold). However to complete our ultimate goal of winning the MAAC team title and earning a berth to the NCAA Championships we also know we will have to count on the, as yet unknown, strengths of our current freshmen to supplement our sophomores, juniors and seniors in the selection of our strongest 23 to go to the start line. Having a spring season that we can actually spend rowing for a substantial amount of time will help so looking for some support from El Nino to warm things up (without blowing us off the river instead!)."

2015 Outlook - "Playing an interesting dance with the women's team based on mid season switch of date for MAAC Championship now landing on the same day as our graduation. Not what our seniors were expecting for their final year. As a squad, the biggest upheaval this year was not on the student-athlete side but on the coaching side with a new set of assistants and head coach responsibilities being pulled more equally to the men's squad. So far (fingers crossed) the winter has been mild and with potentially more access to the water this spring compared to 2014, Fairfield will again be in the mix as a contender for the MAAC Championship. It will take a very brave coach to make a champions prediction with Marist, Jacksonville, Robert Morris, Canisius and Drake in the mix. Stetson may (or may not!) need one more building year before being a team contender. Iona will have a spring in their step after a successful winter training trip and if not a team championship squad yet, they can always take points away from another crew crushing someone else's championship dream. Sacred Heart, along with Jaclyn Smith, had a useful freshman boat this fall that could take some points off an unsuspecting team challenger. While the MAAC champion might not trouble other conference champions at NCAAs just yet, the battle for the bid will be arguably one of the most intriguing conference championship regattas on offer."
