HS/Scholastic: Cambridge Rindge & Latin School vs. Boston Latin School
June 5, 2005; Charles River

Submitted by Dale Wickenheiser.

Distance: 2.5 miles
Conditions: Sunny and hot. Flat water. Little to no breeze. Slight current.
Comments: Downstream course has 6 turns between Community Rowing and the Cambridge Boat Club. Floating start. Both crews started at 38+ and settled to 33-34. It was stroke for stroke most of the course. Both crews used the multiple turns to open or close a gap with Boston Latin just leading for most of the race. Coming into the last 500 meters Boston Latin held 1/2 length open lead. Cambridge closed to within a length but with 100 meters to go, both crews came upon (and split around) a novice crew that suddenly swerved to port forcing Cambridge to steer hard to port to avoid a collision. Conclusion was Cambridge probably would not have caught Boston and the results stand. An unfortunate finish to such a well contested event. Winning time bested the previous year's time by 53 seconds.
