Collegiate Men: Cal vs. Washington, Men
April 28, 2001; Montlake Cut, Seattle, WA

Submitted by Mike Schoback.

Distance: 2000m
Comments: The No. 1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight defeated No. 5 Washington by 9.2 seconds in a dual race on the Montlake Cut in Seattle, WA, April 28. For the Bears varsity it was the third-consecutive dual race victory over UW for the Schoch Cup, and 10th-consecutive defeat of the Washington varsity when all regattas are considered.

"We are very pleased with today's outcome," said coach Steve Gladstone. "Once the varsity settled into the race, it seemed to really move well."

Cal took the lead off the start and began to move decisively after the race was a minute old. By the 650m-mark, the Bears had taken a length on the Huskies and moved another five seats ahead by the 1000m-mark. Cal continued to "open water" over the last half of the race and crossed the finish with more than a full length of open between them and Washington.

In the JV race, the Bears avenged a four second loss to UW at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 8, by posting a 4.3 second victory on the Huskies home course.

"It was good to see the JV reverse the decision from San Diego," said Gladstone. "They've been looking forward to this race for nearly a month."

In the freshman race, while the Bears seemed to make some strides since the last time the crews raced, but apparently so had the Huskies. Washington took the decision by just over a boat length.

The Bears varsity coxed four recorded their first victory over Washington since 1997.

Cal gets a week off from competition before the crews travel to the Pac-10 Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, May 13. The Bears primary competition at Pac-10s will be the same Husky crews in each event.
