Conditions: The elements looked like they would be the big story on the first day of of the University of Victoria's 32nd Annual Elk Lake Spring Regatta. The fog rolled in forcing the postponment of racing after the first three events came down. After an hours delay though it lifted to the delight of the waiting rowers. Calm waters were the order of the day which lead to exceptional racing for the 400 plus athletes competing.
The host Vikes were too gracious to visiting Oregon State, as the Beavers walloped UVic in the novice womens eight and JV womens eight. UVic however claimed top prize in the JV mens eight with a hard fought victory over Shawnigan and Vancouver College Senior Boys crews. Evan Wilson and Hilary Whetung-Cole won a tight battle over their teammates to claim the open womens pair title.
The Victoria Training Center flexed their muscle on the day with crews training for the national team winning the lightweight mens and womens single(Cameron), open mens single (Seiterlies) and the Open mens pair(Keesey). On the local club side the Vic City crews won four titles (womens Junior JV coxed four,masters womens double 50+ and 40+ and the open womens single)and the Gorge crews took home 3 titles (junior mens quad, masters mens single, junior womens pair).
Vancouvers Crofton House took both the junior womens singloe and double while Brentwood claimed the masters mens quad and junior mens pairs.
Racing commences tomorrow with the feature races of the day the mens and womens eights going at 11;40 am and 10:20 am respectively.
