Mixed Regatta: Elk Lake Spring Regatta - Sunday
March 4, 2007; Victoria BC

Thanks to Rick Crawley.

Conditions: A beautiful day for racing after weeks of stormy weather was what the crews got at the University of Victoria's 32nd Elk Lake Spring Regatta. Sunday racing was a little windier than the dead calm of Saturday, but the light cross tail just helped everyone down the course a little faster. On the day UVic crews faired well in their races with 6 wins. In the varsity eight the Vikes women pushed out to almost a length lead at the 1000, but couldn't hold off a relentless Oregon State team that pushed through with 500 to go to win by 10 seconds in a time of 6.23.9. The mens big eight was in tough against a trio of national team boats as well as Oregon and sat in second through the 1000 to the training center number 1 boat, but a push by the second VTC crew relegated UVic to third place where they had to hold off a fast charging Oregon crew and the lightweights from the training center to finish third. Both varsities turned tables in the open fours with the Vikes women going 1/2 over SFU and the Beavers. Cox Vikki Agate had her crew of Leah Volkers, Aly Kryszkiewicz, Evan Wilson and Korena Vine stoked up and storming down the course in a sizzling 7.14 to win by a boat length over the second UVic crew. On the mens side Oregon pressed but the Vikes pushed out with 500 to go and opened up a two boat length lead to win in 6.32.6 to Oregon's 6.39.9. UVic won both the JV mens and womens 4+, as well as the open mens and womens quads for six victories on the day. It was the lighties for the UVic women fighting it out for 1st and second in the quad with the crew of Victoria Gilbert, Jeannine Randall, Caitlyn McNamara and Rebecca Jane Schuler pushing across first in a time of 6.59.8. Brentwood was a dominate presence in the junior mens ranks, convincingly winning the eight, four and double for a triple crown in varsity events. On the womens side it was a mixed bag with Vic City winning the varsity four in the morning but succumbing to the Gorge in the eight in the afternoon. Meanwhile Crofton/Burnaby continued their dominance of sculling taking the junior womens quad. The training center lightweights were a dominate force in the doubles with both events top three positions going to VTC crews. The regatta ran on time all day thanks to the excellent work of the Rowing BC officials and the UVic student-athletes workforce. They hosted 900 competitors racing in 85 races over the two day event with around 1000 spectators taking in the action. That is rowing in the wild wild west. Giddyup !!
