400 ROWERS TOOK TO THE WATER
The Bill Lockyer 30th Annual Christmas Regatta hosted by Long Beach Rowing Association-Success Despite El Niño
[Long Beach]- Spectators lined the Long Beach Marine Stadium to cheer over 400 rowers from as far away as Europe as they competed in the Long Beach Rowing Association's (LBRA) 30th Annual Christmas Regatta. Despite threatening weather, the races went off smoothly and the crowd stayed dry.
LBRA's Elite Rowing Group (ERG), coached by Ian Simpson, dominated the one-day competition. Thirteen elite athletes won 13 events, for a total of 43 gold medals in open events. Eric Eldridge took 4 golds in the Men's Open Single, Men's 8, Mixed Open Double, and the Men's Open 4. Hanna Rassmussen, training at LBRA from Norway, took golds in both the Women's Open Single and Mixed Open Double.
LBRA's Master Women won the Master Women's 8 event sponsored by the Coffee Cup Café of Long Beach, the Watson Family Trophy was won by the San Diego Rowing Club in the Junior Men's 8, the Century Club Trophy was won by LBRA Master Men's 8, and the Grunion Newspaper Trophy was won by Serra Notre Dame High School from Palo Alto, CA in the Womens Junior 8.
Former Olympian rower, Norbert Hlobil, from Austria, rows in Long Beach as often as his travel schedule allows. On his last trip, he competed in the Masters Nationals, also hosted by LBRA. This trip brought him 2 golds: Master Men's 8 (50 years +) and the Master Men's Double (50+). He said, "The Christmas Regatta is the perfect competition for anyone coming from Europe's cold-weather countries. Even with the threat of rain and El Niño, it is always fun to row in warm weather."
