Occoquan Sprints

April 5, 1998; Occoquan Reservoir, Sandy Run Regional Park, VA

Comments: On Sunday, April 5th, the George Mason University Crew Club hosted the Occoquan Sprints on their home course at Sandy Run Regional Park.There were 20 schools competing with over 700 rowers. Competition included Drexel University, William and Mary, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, Penn State, University of Richmond, Trinity College, Towson University, Saint Marys College of Maryland, UMBC, Washington College, Loyola College, Lehigh University, John Hopkins, Catholic University and others. The conditions at the Occoquan reservoir were rough with a 15-25 mph head wind. The rough waters contributed to long, hard races and also lead to floating starts and moving starts. "The regatta ran very smoothly, we had no protest and a strong turn out of alumni, family and friends help volunteer to run the regatta," said Bob Spousta, varsity men’s coach and regatta director.
