Goldthwait Cup: Harvard, Yale @ Princeton (LW men)

May 2, 1998; Lake Carnegie, Princeton, NJ

Conditions: light tailwind, extremely good water made for very fast conditions. Varsity 8 time was record-setting for the Carnegie, as was the HW men's time in the Brown race, held earlier in the morning.

Varsity 8
Princeton 5:38.42
Yale 5:43.37
Harvard 5:46.43
In the first 15 strokes of this event, the Harvard stroke ripped out yet another
Resolute steering system. Breakage rules were 500 meters, and the HArvard cox immediately put his
hand in the air, and official Ron Chen stopped the race. The steering mechanism was
fixed on the water by Princeton boatman Brad Woodrick, and the race was restarted
after about a 15 minute delay.
Yale took an early lead, which they stretched to up to six seats at times in the
first 100 meters. Harvard led Princeton early, until late in the second 500
when Princeton started to push the field slightly. The third 500, however,
was dominated by Princeton, who came from third into a very strong second
position. As Yale responded, the Harvard crew appeared unable to match the
pace of the race for the lead, and trailed by about one length on both
Princeton and Yale for some time. Princeton went past Yale at around
1300 meters and never stopped moving away. Both Yale and Princeton
went across the 500-to-go mark at very near 40 spm, with Princeton
about a beat higher, but Princeton did not falter. The final time
beat the previous LW men's record on Lake Carnegie by five seconds;
Yale's time missed matching the course record by just a fraction
of a second.

Second Varsity
Princeton 5:47.25
Yale 5:51.60
Harvard 6:04.08

Third Varsity 4
Princeton A 6:43.68
Princeton B 6:52.78
Yale 6:56.47
Harvard A 7:02.36
Harvard B 7:04.88

First Freshman
Princeton 5:49.71
Yale 5:50.86
Harvard 5:59.62
It looked like Yale would win this one for about 1850 meters, as they established
an early lead that seemed almost insurmountable at times. Princeton started charging
late in the third 500, and almost methodically rowed into Yale's lead, getting by with about
10 strokes to go for the win.

Second Freshman
Harvard 6:05.71
Princeton 6:11.32
Yale 6:22.32
