Childs Cup; Princeton, Penn @ Columbia

April 11, 1998; Harlem River, New York, NY

The Childs Cup is the oldest intercollegiate cup race. Princeton has won for the past five contests.

Conditions: headwind, some chop. 2F raced into tide, V8 at slack, 2V then 1F on following tide.

Varsity 8
Princeton 6:05.74
Penn 6:06.47
Columbia 6:34.53
Comments: Penn led off the start, rowing in the upper 40s, and very clean, trailed by Princeton, then Columbia. Princeton moved back gradually, pulling even with about 800 to go. Princeton moved out to almost a full length before a strong Penn charge in the final strokes of the race.
Actual margin may have been slightly larger than the .73 official margin.

Second Varsity 8
Princeton 6:06.99
Penn 6:15.10
Columbia 6:48.23

First Freshman
Princeton 5:51.82
Penn 6:00.92
Columbia 6:08.46
Comments: Very close racing for the first few hundred meters before Princeton slowly moved away from the field. Columbia was in second for up to 800 meters before Penn moved through out to about an 8-seat lead. At approx. 700 to go, a pleasure boat that had come up the final 500 very quickly sent large wakes across the course, as well as rendering the final 500 extremely bouncy, almost unrowable. Margins remained essentially the same from just prior to the mishap to the finish.

Second Freshman
Princeton 7:03.45
Penn 7:26.75
