NO. 2 CAL MEN’S VARSITY EIGHT SUFFERS BREAKAGE; NO. 1 HUSKIES WIN

Saturday, April 25
Redwood Shores, CA—The No. 2-ranked Cal varsity eight suffered breakage in the race for the Schoch Cup and were unable to finish as the No. 1-ranked Washington Huskies paddled across the line to take the win on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, Saturday, April 25. Washington remains undefeated and the favorite to repeat as national champion while the Bears should remain well respected at No. 2 in the eyes of the coaches from across the country.

The Bears jumped off the line and led the Huskies by a few seats in the early going, but once the crews had passed outside the 100 meter breakage zone, Cal stroke Andreja Stevanovic inadvertently hooked the coxswain’s steering line at the catch with his oar and ripped it out of the shell on the ensuing stroke. Although the Bears were in the lead and moving at this point, the varsity was unable to continue.

The Bears JV and freshman crews did post wins over the counterparts from Washington, however. The Cal JV’s outdistanced their rivals by four seconds while the Bear frosh bested the Huskies by a half length. Both the JV and the frosh boats remain undefeated on the season and should be the No. 1 seeds at the Pac-10 Championships, May 17, in their respective events.

"Overall is was a solid performance by our men’s heavyweight program," said coach Steve Gladstone. "We came ready to race today and I think it would have been a tight finish in the varsity event. We’re disappointed that breakage was the deciding factor. Thankfully, we will have the opportunity to race the Huskies again at the Pac-10s and the IRA with championships on the line."
