Release: GEORGIA TECH CLAIMS FIRST PLACE AT ATLANTIC COAST COLLEGIATE REGATTA

CLEMSON, S.C. – Georgia Tech claimed first place in three events and finished second in five other events en route to winning the Champion International Cup at the fourth annual Atlantic Coast Collegiate Regatta Saturday at Hartwell Lake.

The Yellow Jackets took first in the men's varsity four (6:56.8), men's freshmen/novice four (7:01.3), and the men's varsity eight (6:01.2). Georgia Tech finished second in the women's freshmen/novice lightweight four (9:25.1), men's freshmen/novice lightweight eight (7:04.5), women's freshmen/novice lightweight eight (8:26.7), men's freshmen/novice four (7:01.3), and women's varsity eight (6:45.8).

The North Carolina women's crew, the only participating school currently holding varsity status on the NCAA Division I level, won all four events it entered. The Tar Heels took first in the freshmen/novice four (8:33.1), varsity four (8:00.2), freshmen/novice eight (6:01.2), and varsity eight (6:37.0). North Carolina finished third in the overall point totals.

Regatta host Clemson finished second overall after winning the women's freshmen/novice lightweight four (8:43.5) and the women's lightweight four (8:07.5).

The 16-race Atlantic Coast Collegiate Regatta opened the 1998 Champion International Collegiate Rowing Series. Other regattas in the eight-year-old series will include, the EAWRC Eastern Sprints in New Preston, Conn., May 10, the Champion International Collegiate Regatta in Worchester, Mass., May 10, the EARC Eastern Sprints in Worchester, Mass., May 17, and the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, in Sacramento, Calif., May 16-17.

The series sponsor, Champion International Corporation headquartered in Stamford, Conn., is one of the largest paper companies in the nation and has been an official sponsor of USRowing since 1988.
