General rule, there is a rough equivalence between the IRA winners in the 1F and 1Lt. Cal 1F, Harvard 1F, Yale 1Lt are all seeded crews in the upper half of the draw and should be of comparable speed. If all goes to form, the quarters will be Harvard v Yale and Cal v. Imperial College London (Historically, pretty quick -- could be lightweights). I'd give Yale lw an edge over the Harvard 1F in a tail or flat conditions. But in a mild headwind, which is often the prevailing conditions, I'd switch. Should be a fun race with bragging rights both for school and weight class. Cal should be a slight favorites against both Imperial and the HY winner. FIT faces the Cambridge ltw in the first round, and if they survive, Yale ltw in the second round. ...
In the lower half of the draw, Virginia got a seed, and if all goes to form, they will meet University of London in the quarters. London should be favored over the Cavilers. If UV survives, Queen's College or ASR Nerus await in the Semis. Hobart, if they make it past the first round, will likely face London then UV in the quarters.
I quite agree with the rankings of this poll as it stands. Cal's freshmen won IRAs, trailed by Harvard's freshmen two places back. Yale would be the obvious choice for third in this pole, owing to the fact that it's their gold medal winning lwt 8. IRA/ eastern sprints lwts are generally faster than most Dad Vail and ECAC heavyweight crews, though I could be wrong because you can't compare Schuylkill times to those on any fair course. FIT beet UVA at Vails but UVA has obviously found speed because they beat UMich at ECACs. Since UMich has decided not to attend, the second place DV crew from FIT has decided to take Aberdeen up on their generous sponsorship. FIT has some fast men no doubt, but it's really the stern five in that boat taking those in the bow along for a ride. Its going to take 8 men as strong as their fastest man, who is sub 6 for 2k, to beat Cal, HU and Yale. UVA has some serious ergs too and rows very well, but I do not see them making it to the final day, though I am stoked about how far the program has come in just a few years. As for Hobart, its good to see this team making strides at the international level. Good luck to all! USA USA USA!
oh i wish i could comment on this. lets just say the fight between Harvard' boat and Yale's will be sweet, and everyone should be able to tell from my sweet name that I am biased here. Cal's frosh will be troublesome for sure. Can't wait. anyone interested in the Prince Albert Cup?
