I'm sorry I didn't clarify, I too hardly call UVA small and inexperienced. I was talking about their novice 8--if you saw them @ SIRA, they were considerably smaller and (assuming majority were walkons) less experienced than the much, much larger UCSD novice; which only makes their win that more remarkable and special. That's all I was trying to say.
let's get real here. Virginia had some big guys, 2 and 7 were huge, but the size differences were negligible at best as you can clearly see in these photos. The race came down to about 6 inches or whatever and when its that close it's a function of where each boat is in the stroke. UCSD surged ahead of Virginia a bit after the finish line but they were ahead where it counted. If UCSD had come out ahead it wouldn't mean that Virginia was any less dedicated or UCSD were any more, both crews were right there and someone had to cross the line first. That doesn't take away from the fact that it was the closest and best races I've ever been a part of. It could have just as easily gone the other way by random luck and regardless of who came out in front I think that it was a "remarkable and special" race. You don't need to insult me and my teammates by implying that the race was ours to win and we didn't perform as well as we should have given our supposed size and experience, Virginia is a great crew and program and they came out in front, just leave it at that.
There werent any seeds for the novice 8 at SIRA, but UCSD was the biggest, most experienced crew out there. Their frosh were huge; and for a smaller, inexperienced club team to pull off the win was nothing short of amazing. "Exquisite job", as row said, does not do the crew justice; their win was monumental, it will be interesting to see how (and if) UCSD can bounce back.
Virginia MF8 description: "Won the SIRA over top seed UCSD." I was not aware that there were any seeds for the novice 8 at SIRA... because there weren't.
While I agree with the Dayton WV8 decision, I feel there should be more support for the Virginia Men's Freshman 8+. They proved they were faster and more dedicated than any other boat at the SIRA regatta. Exquisite job.
Mercyhurst definitely had a great race at SIRAs, but I feel like Nova SE and Humbolt are going to give the 2010 NCAA Champs a run for their money. The underdogs are FAST this year!
Mercyhurst had been on the water all of two weeks before SIRAs. They're only going to get faster. I agree that Nova and Humboldt have both made strides this year and nobody is to be discounted. I also agree that WW should be concerned.
