1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I followed my sister to a winter training season at CRI when I was 12. My first row on the water was in a 12 person barge, two people across and six people back with an aisle down the middle for the coach to walk around. My friend and I made sure we were in the front and had a blast stroking. I loved how you got out what you put in. If you pulled harder you were faster, there was no cutting corners. I learned that in our first barge race!
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I fell in love with rowing during my first novice season. It was so fun to all work together in an eight for the first time. I had always dreamed of going to the Olympics when I was little, but I was inspired to row in the Olympics when I raced at the 2012 junior world championships in the women's quad. We really looked up to the Olympic quad that year.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
One of my favorite races was the 2016 NCAA final in the women's varsity 8. We were in last place and sprinted to 4th and missed 3rd by half a bow ball. We didn't get the medal but it was one of those races when you're in the zone with your boat and everything comes together with a lot of grit and an absurdly high stroke rate - a Brown Crew speciality.
My worst practice is usually jumping back in the single for the first time when it's been a while. There is nothing like pushing off the dock and being unstable and then taking some strokes and wondering how you're ever going to get up to race pace. Like most things, time and patience eventually help with that!
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I have raced every sculling event internationally - the Quad at Juniors, Single and Double at U23s and the Senior double. (until they introduce the octuple ??).
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
I would say to enjoy the high school experience because it is a special time in your rowing career. It is also important to believe in yourself no matter what life throws at you.
