After a weekend filled with calls for postponement from nearly all quarters of the Olympic movement, including Olympic committees, athletic governing bodies, athletes, health experts, anti-doping officials, and more, Olympic officials are finally beginning to concede what has seemed nearly inevitable for the past couple days, a postponement of the Tokyo Games.
The most likely scenario is a postponement to summer 2021; at least a couple invested groups have mentioned a full one-year postponement explicitly.
USA Gymnastics joined the chorus of NGBs asking for a postponement, although they did not specify a timeframe; others joining the chorus include the French swimming association, Austria's vice chancellor, and countless athletes.
A survey of US track and field athletes pegged support for a postponement at close to 90%.
