Three close races highlighted Tuesday's semifinals in the men's double sculls and men's pair at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials ? Rowing on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. With the top two crews in each race advancing to Wednesday's first round of finals, two races saw fierce battles between the second and third-place boats.
Crews representing the USRowing Training Center took all four spots in the men's pair final. In an incredibly close semifinal, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Greenwich, Conn.) sprinted from behind to squeeze past Brodie Buckland (Olympia, Wash.) and Sebastian Bea (San Francisco, Calif.), winning by a margin of 0.002 seconds. The Winklevoss brothers finished in a 6:33.815. Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Matt Schnobrich (St. Paul, Minn.) took first in the second race, posting a 6:34.819. It was a close race for second as Ben Harrison (Dedham, Mass.) and Alex Hearne (Princeton, N.J.) held off Kyle Larson (Seattle, Wash.) and David Worley (Oak Harbor, Wash.) to advance to the final, winning by less than one second.
California Rowing Club's Elliot Hovey (Manchester, Mass.) and Wes Piermarini (West Brookfield, Mass.) won the first semifinal in the men's double sculls, posting a 6:28.082. Warren Anderson (Paso Robles, Calif.) and Jon Greer (Chester, N.H.) finished second in a 6:30.203. Bantam Boat Club's Thomas and Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the second semifinal, crossing the line in a 6:24.788. In a tight race for second, Michael Holbrook and Andrew Liverman (Oakton, Va.) of California Rowing Club/Penn A.C. staved off Durham Boat Club's Deaglan McEachern (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Francis Cuddy (Amherst, N.H.) to advance to the final. The margin between the two crews was 0.086 seconds, with Holbrook and Liverman finishing in a 6:27.720.
Finals also begin tomorrow in the women's single sculls and women's pair. Four scullers have entered the women's single sculls, including two-time world championships bronze medalist Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.). The seven-time national team member dominated the 2008 National Selection Regatta #1 in early April, winning the final by more than 13 seconds over Vesper Boat Club's Julie Nichols (Livermore, Calif.). Nichols is also entered in the event, as are 2004 Olympian Lisa Schlenker (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and 2003 National Team member Meghan Sarbanis (Hampstead, N.H.).
Three crews make up the women's pair field, including two from USRowing Training Center. The duo of Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.) and Elle Logan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) come into the regatta having just won a silver medal at the 2008 Rowing World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland. Lind and Logan also won a bronze medal at the world cup race in Munich, Germany, in early May. Anna Cummins (Bellevue, Wash.) and Portia McGee (Seattle, Wash.), who finished in third place just behind their U.S. teammates in Lucerne, also will be racing in the event.
Finals are held in a best two-out-of-three format, with the first set of finals taking place Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. The second set of finals will take place Thursday starting at 7:30 a.m., with third finals taking place Friday, if necessary. The start time for Friday's racing is to be announced. The winners of each event will be named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, pending United States Olympic Committee approval. The 2008 U.S. Olympic Rowing Team will be named in several stages. In addition to the four crews that will be selected during this regatta, six crews including the men's four, lightweight men's four, men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, men's eight and women's eight are camp selected boats that will be named by their respective national team coaches on June 27. The U.S. has yet to qualify three boats for the 2008 Olympic Games ? the men's single sculls, lightweight women's double sculls and lightweight men's double sculls. USRowing will send a representative in each of those boat categories to the 2008 Olympic Qualification Regatta scheduled for June 15-18 in Poznan, Poland. If the crews finish high enough, they will represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games in Beijing. If they do not finish high enough, the U.S. will not send a boat in that category. The women's double sculls crew has already been selected to the team.
