1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I was actually sitting around my dorm, decorating the walls of the common room with all the 12pk boxes we were finishing, when my roommate said we should go down the next day and check out the rowing team. We had seen a flyer earlier that week. I remember the two team assistant coaches; guys who had rowed for years and had more school to finish. They looked very confident and content. I also liked the fact that there was a bowling alley in the boathouse.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
It's the kind of sport that sneaks up on you, I guess, like any addiction, or obsession. I was just trying to beat a lightweight on our team, who happen to be lying about his erg scores, and I noticed that my time were comparing with top times for the USRowing monthly testing. I thought to myself...why not?
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Best race was '99 Worlds. Worst race was the heat in Sydney. I can't separate one practice from the next.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
This winter I was in Falls Creek, Australia on a training trip/vacation and barely squeaked out one 2500m piece in the single against a 17 year old named Beth. However, I was in Dick Garrard's single in 3 foot cross chop. But, it was also the only piece i won all week.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Keep things light. Have as much fun as possible, don't get hung up on winning and losing, that's only part of it. When you're racing, leave everything you've got on the water and the rest will take care of itself.
