Canada's adaptive crews began their journey to rowing's first Paralympic Games in 2008 with solid results at the World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany.
The mixed adaptive coxed four was first in today's heat in 3:40.54 over 1000 metres. The four is Megan Montgomery of Winnipeg, Man., Victoria Nolan of Toronto, Ont., Scott Rand of Calgary, Alta., Tony Theriault of Victoria and Laura Comeau (coxswain) of St. Catharines, Ont.
"It was an awesome experience," said Scott Rand of his first international race. "You try not looking over at the other boats, but I couldn't help but look and see the U.S. right there with us the whole time."
In the men's arms-only single, Peter Morel of Ottawa, Ont. finished second in 5:46.94 to Tom Aggar of Great Britain. Aggar and Canada's Morel advance to the semi-finals.
"There were 17 countries as opposed to 12 last year, so there is great growth in the sport," said Peter Morel, who is competing in his first World Championships. "I'm extremely proud to represent my country at this event and I look forward to being in Beijing next year."
Joan Reid, rowing in the adaptive women's single, was third in 6:33.11. Reid, of Enderby B.C., will row in the rep to further advance.
The adaptive mixed double of Wilfredo Moré Wilson of Toronto, Ont. and Caitlin Renneson of Ottawa, Ont. was also third in an exciting heat that saw them get overtaken in the last section of the race. China and Greece finished first and second to qualify for the semis, while Canada's double will get another chance to move toward the medal rounds in the reps.
Adaptive races continue tomorrow, Thursday and finals take place on Saturday.
