Six more post-season bids got locked up over the weekend at the Dad Vail and NIRC Regattas. With just one more weekend of championship racing to go, the fields for the IRA Regatta and the NCAAs, on the Division III side, have started to take shape.
The Tufts women will return to the NCAAs to defend their 2024 Division III title as the NESCAC winners. The Jumbos, who moved into the #1 spot in the Pocock CRCA poll last week, took the NESCAC title with an outright win at the NIRC for a second straight year. They finished ahead of fellow NESCAC contenders Williams, Wesleyan, Bates, and Trinity in the Grand Final. Liberty League champ Ithaca, which earned their conference's AQ last week, took fifth in the grand final, just ahead of Trinity.
Tufts will join fellow AQ winners Ithaca, St. Mary's (MD), and Wellesley at this year's NCAAs, and the rest of the eight team Division III field will be announced during the NCAA Division III Selection Show on Tuesday, May 13th at 5:00 PM EST. More information on each of the Division III Championship Qualifiers can be found in row2k's 2025 NCAA Championships coverage.
The Trinity Men won their IRA bid by earning their first NESCAC title since 2008. Trinity, which has been leading the IRCA/IRA D3 poll since April 9th, has raced at all three editions of the IRA D3 Championship but this will be just their second automatic invitation, and the first as NESCAC champions. Their best IRA finish to date was a third place showing in 2022.
Bates earned the second IRA D3 bid on offer at NIRC's, scoring the upset over #2 Wesleyan, who faded to sixth in the Grand Final on Sunday. Bates, polling at #3, as of last week, finished fifth at last year's IRA, and won bronze in 2023.
The D1 field at the IRA--which will decide the heavyweight men's varsity eight national champion for the 122nd year--has its first three qualifiers: Temple, LaSalle, and MIT.
Temple, which has missed out on an IRA team bid the past two years, won the Dad Vails to lock up a chance to return, and LaSalle--polling just behind Temple at #17--grabbed the second spot on offer ahead of Drexel, last year's Dad Vail winner. This will be LaSalle's third IRA in a row as a team, and--with the Dad Vail expanding to two bids this year--they earned an automatic invite for the first time on Saturday.
At the NIRC on Sunday, MIT also earned a return trip to the IRA as the top D1 crew at the regatta. They took fifth on Sunday ahead of last year's D3 champion, Wesleyan, and finished 21st overall at last year's IRA regatta, ahead of UCSD, Santa Clara, and Jacksonville.
More information on the full IRA qualification process can be found in row2k's 2025 IRA Championships coverage.
Heavyweight men's qualification will continue this coming weekend at the EARC Sprints--where the top nine schools will qualify--and the MPSF Championship on the west coast, which will send its top six teams. The EARC Sprints will also determine the seven automatic qualifiers for the lightweight men's championship.
The full fields for each of the four national championships determined at the IRA will be announced on Tuesday, May 20th.
