With an LA 2028 Olympic bid appearing likely, and FISA beginning to turn the venue search wheel, one proposal that has garnered some interest is the proposal of using the 1932 Olympic course at the Long Beach Marine Stadium, but potentially shortening the course to 1500 meters due to development along to waterway.
In response to FISA's proposal to shorten the Olympic racing distance to 1500m, row2k.com stated unequivocally this week that the operation would not change its name to "row1.5k.com" in 2028.
"Besides the practical matter of that extra period in the URL, row1.5k.com just doesn't roll off the virtual tongue the same way," said row2k IT operations manager Mongo von Flugel. "And if we change it to row15k.com, people will think we're suddenly into marathon rowing, or CrossFit, or something else really weird."
Finally, as row2k's editorial board pointed out, for the past 22 years row2k has celebrated rowing in all its shapes and guises, but still holds that there's still only one way to determine the world's fastest rowers each year. "You rig your boat, you put it in the water, and you row two K. BOOM! Done."
