The start of spring racing is fast approaching and the Crew Classic Offices are putting on the finishing touches for this year’s activities. There will be new vendors at the course this year including Pit Viper and Blenders sunglasses, as well as new s new Crew Classic JL unis which are on sale now. Best of all, there will be a Welcome Taco Party on Friday night, purchase your tickets here. Sorry kids, this one is 21+.
New this year to the juniors events will be the addition of the Junior Varsity 4x and Novice 4x+, they are sure to bring some new excitement and competition to the weekend. With these exciting events coming to Crew Classic this year, let's take a look at which top junior teams will be racing down the course this year.
Last year Redwood Scullers dominated the Varsity 4x event going 1 and 2 and then going on to place 2nd at Youth Nationals. They will be returning this year with only one entry in the event, so will they be challenged by last year's third-place crew New Canaan?
Lastly, the Referee Cup LA84 Foundation Trophy will be showing off the lightweight 8s from the West Coast. Marin, who has been the winners of the event for the past two years and placed 2nd at Youth Nationals in the lightweight 8, will return this year to compete for the cup against top West Coast crews. Look out though, Capital will also be in the event and they raced Marin at Youth Nationals in the A final. They could challenge them for the cup.
Junior Men:
The San Diego Rowing Cup will be bringing back top men's varsity 8 crews for some fierce racing on Mission Bay. With last year's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, Capital, Newport and Marin going one, two, and three at Southwest Regionals. Marina Aquatic Center was able to defeat Newport at San Diego Fall Classic this past year though. Will Newport be able to beat them when they meet back on Mission Bay this year?
In the men's 4x, New Canaan Crew won last year's event and were the champions in the men's 4x at Youth Nationals. Will Redwood Scullers, who placed second and third in the event last year, be able to challenge New Canaan and win the event this year?
In the Shimano Rowing Dynamic Cup, last year's lightweight eight winners, Belen Jesuit, will return to defend their title. However, Newport Aquatic Center, who defeated them at Youth Nationals and won the event there, will also be competing. This will be a race to watch as these top teams will be competing against many others in this competitive event.
Next up, the Masters! That means you, so if you haven't registered now is the time, then we can be sure to include your team. Stay tuned!
