Getting Situated
Coaches and Scullers are reminded that the launching sites for Head Of The Charles will be the same as they were in 2005! The main launching area for crews is at the Finish Area Launch Site (FALS), which is near the finish line on Soldier's Field Road, at Herter Park in Brighton. The main launching area for scullers is at the Singles and Doubles Launch (SADL) site at Magazine Beach on Memorial Drive (Route 2), in Cambridge by the Boston University Bridge. Parking at FALS is limited to trailers, and at SADL to car-topped singles and doubles. Parking is first come, first served at either site.
Fours and Eights go to FALS at Herter Park in Brighton
Boat launching and storage space for crews are available at FALS (Finish Area Launch Site) on Soldier's Field Road on the Boston side of the river by the Regatta finish line-between the Eliot Bridge and Northeastern University's Henderson Boathouse.
Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) volunteers and Park Rangers will be on-site to assist with parking, boat storage and launching activities. Trailers may begin arriving at 7:00 AM Friday. Early arrivals will not be allowed overnight parking. Trailers will not be allowed to line-up outside the lot before 7:00 AM because of traffic flow concerns. Trailers arriving before this time will be directed to a nearby annex lot.
All trailers must enter FALS from the Eliot Bridge-at the end of both of Memorial Drive and Soldier's Field Road. A Regatta volunteer will meet each trailer to issue the driver a parking permit for a specific area, and direct the driver to that area. Courteous cooperation with their direction is expected.
Under no circumstances should a trailer be left unattended or parked on Soldier's Field Road (i.e., not in a parking lot) at any time-it will be subject to towing.
The docks are installed along the Charles River and available for use on Friday. There will be three docks before the finish line and at least three docks after the finish line. Trailers will be parked very closely together and not necessarily in close proximity to the launching docks. The Regatta is providing Wintech Boat Racks near the docks for storage of boats during the weekend, and use of these racks is strongly encouraged. The racks will be available for sale after the event. Once crews have parked their trailers, crews are asked to not move their trailer again until departing, after your racing is over.
Lightly loaded trailers must be unloaded at FALS lot #2, on Soldier's Field Road, and then must go to Daley Field on Nonantum Road, near Community Rowing, Inc. Only trailers will be permitted to enter lot #2, and loading permits do not allow the vehicle to park. Unauthorized parked vehicles will be towed! A shuttle bus service will circulate throughout the entire three-mile course, so athletes and spectators can easily move around the Regatta and to various permissible parking areas.
After leaving the trailer parking area, no trucks may return until late Sunday afternoon. If your vehicle is carrying shells to be used only on Saturday (shells for Club events) and you wish to remove the vehicle permanently after the racing on Saturday, please let the Regatta Volunteer at the gate know this and you will be assigned a special unobstructed parking space to allow you to leave.
Absolutely NO trailers may park on Greenough Boulevard, as they will be towed. Van parking will be permitted on Greenough Boulevard inbound (East), from the Arsenal Street Bridge, along the river to the Belmont Hill School boat house. ALL VEHICLES WILL BE TOWED AS OF 5 PM EACH EVENING.
Vehicles carrying only single or double shells will not be permitted to enter FALS. However, trailers with large boats and some singles and doubles will be allowed to enter and launch from FALS.
Singles and Doubles go to SADL at Magazine Beach in Cambridge
Singles and doubles are directed to the Singles and Doubles Launch (SADL) site at Magazine Beach, on Memorial Drive (Route 2) in Cambridge. Rowers of singles and doubles may drop off their shells beginning Friday morning at 8:00 AM at SADL. Scullers can store their boats at SADL and launch from nearby docks. Regatta competitors with only singles or doubles will not be allowed into FALS.
Please note, this is NOT overnight parking. Please park only in designated areas and avoid areas recently seeded for grass.
Security will be at both FALS and SADL
Starting Thursday evening, security will be on-site at SADL and FALS, and will continue both Friday and Saturday evenings to provide a roaming presence. The Head Of The Charles does not assume responsibility for equipment.
Parking is available on Birmingham Parkway beginning Friday and running through Sunday, and Greenough Boulevard on Saturday and Sunday only. Drivers should obey posted regulations, as towing will begin at 5:00 PM each night. The use of public transportation is strongly encouraged all weekend. The course is within easy walking distance of 3 MBTA locations: Central & Harvard on the Red Line, and Boston University Central stop on the Green Line of the B Branch.
Free shuttle service all Regatta weekend!
Shuttles will circulate the three-mile Regatta course route all weekend. There are two shuttle loops, with an interchange for both routes at Cambridge Boat Club. The shuttle will run on Friday 1:00 PM to 8:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
