Crews and scullers often try to get in a trial run of the three-mile Head Of The Charles curvilinear rowing course, prior to competing in their event. Coaches and rowers need to be aware the Regatta course now has revised practice times for 2006. Rowers need to plan their practice time accordingly!
Please take note of changes from last year's practice schedule.
Friday, October 20, 2006
The Regatta course is open for practice before sunrise on Friday morning (for boats using navigation lights). No boats may launch after 5:30 PM. The course is closed at 6:00 PM sharp. ALL boats MUST be off the Regatta course by 6:00 PM or risk being assessed a penalty or disqualification.
In areas where there are no buoys--while the racecourse is being set-up on Friday--boats should keep to the right side of the river (coxswain's view).
No coaches' launches are permitted on the River at any time on Friday.

Coxswain Clinics for Steering the Head Of The Charles
Learn to strategically approach the real race scenarios of the Head Of The Charles Regatta course at the "How to Cox the Perfect Head Race" clinic, presented by Yaz Farooq, World Champion and 8-time U.S. National Team coxswain and John Lambert, chief of the HOCR Rules and Appeals Committee. The clinic will include video examples shot from the coxswain's seat in head racing scenarios, and maps explaining challenging scenarios on the HOCR racecourse. Coxswains, coaches, scullers are encouraged to attend.
There is no need to pre-register: just show up at the clinic. Cost is $15 per person. There are two clinic sessions scheduled, on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. There is also a river tour on Friday, immediately following that clinic session; it's free to clinic attendees and is open to others (space permitting) at $5.00 per person. The boat departs Newell Boathouse at 1:45 PM, and will conclude and disembark at Finish area launch site (FALS).
Friday Coxswains' Clinic 10/20/06 - 12:00 noon
Harvard University's Murr Athletic Center, in the Squash Courts, at 65 North Harvard Street, Boston MA (near the JFK/Anderson Bridge); a $5.00 river tour (free to all clinic attendees) will immediately follow at 1:45 PM.
Saturday Coxswains' Clinic 10/21/06 - 8:00 AM
Buckingham, Browne & Nichols School, Nichols Athletic Center Tennis Courts, at 80 Gerry's Landing Road (across from Cambridge Boat Club); there is NO river tour following this clinic session.
It is strongly recommended that coxswains familiarize themselves with the course and the rules of Head Of The Charles, and these clinic sessions and river tour will be very helpful.
