Virgin Atlantic Airways 'Row Jet Set, Row' Sprints – Friday 7:00 PM Virgin Atlantic Airways is lighting the riverfront skies Friday evening, to kick-off Regatta race events with the 2006 edition of the "Row Jet Set, Row" 350-meter sprint race invitational. For the first time ever, the Head Of The Charles festivities will commence with races taking place at night, as Virgin Atlantic lights up the sprint course for a race featuring the best of Boston and Britain crews. This fast and furious scrimmage starts near the Elliot Bridge and will spectacularly culminate at the HOCR Finish Line at Herter Park in Brighton MA.
This year, the “Row Jet Set, Row” events will consist of two races. The first will be a transatlantic showcase of women, with Eights from Cambridge University and Harvard racing side-by-side for international bragging rights. The second race will pit two top British men's crews against two top Boston crews in a four-lane, all-out sprint to the finish.
The men's British teams from Oxford and Cambridge universities will look to defend the 2005 British victory against Boston's Harvard and Northeastern teams, who are vying to keep the trophy--and bragging rights--in Boston this year.
This super sprint race might take place on the Charles River but it bridges the Atlantic Ocean. Virgin Atlantic Airways is sponsoring this event in part to celebrate its 15 years in Boston, promoting its transatlantic Flight 012 The London Shuttle, which departs from Boston daily.
The 'Row Jet Set, Row' sprint festivities will begin on Friday, October 20 at 7:00 pm with music and giveaways for spectators. Following the evening sprint, there will be a spectacular laser light show to keep the skies bright.
Friday practice alert to all coaches and rowers: This year, crews are able to practice on the river all day on Friday. Boasts MUST be off the water by 6:00 PM sharp; accordingly, no boats are allowed to launch after 5:30 PM on Friday. No launches are permitted on the river anytime on Friday.
