Looking good is tough when you're speeding along with two oars in your hand, curves constantly around the bend, and seven treacherous arches to navigate through. But who needs to look good when you're rowing in a fundraiser? After all, the word "fun" is part of fundraising.
The Head Of The Charles "Directors' Challenge Quadruple Sculls" is back this year, and is destined to be a mainstay event at the Regatta. An added twist to the event is the "most creative rowing attire" award to be bestowed to the quad crews who are dressed to impressed while rowing this extraordinary fundraising event.
The "Directors' Challenge Quadruple Sculls" event is a special charity event for skilled scullers only, whose fees directly contribute to the Regatta's permanent endowment to ensure the longevity of the Head Of The Charles. Quad entrants aren't requited to "dress to thrill," but you can assuredly get bragging rights if your crew gets props for best attire regardless of course time.
The rigors of steering this legendary three-mile course in a coxless quad should provide for very exciting-and eye-catching competition. The "Directors' Challenge Quadruple Sculls" events are Sunday afternoon, October 22nd; the mixed category starts at 1:04 PM, the women's at 1:28 PM and the men's at 3:43 PM. Last year 45 crews met the Challenge without incident.
Entries for this event only will be considered by HOCR until Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 11:59 PM. Participants need to raise $1,000 ($800 is a tax-deductible donation) to row this prestigious event, entitling these competitors the unique opportunity to row twice in the Head Of The Charles. Unlike all other regular Regatta events--where competitors are restricted to row the course only once--Directors' Challenge athletes may race in any other event AND the quadruple scull event.
Also unique to this event: crews can be mixed or single gender. Entrants can have their boat sponsored by corporations or other organizations, and must verify rowers are skilled oarsman capable of navigating the curvilinear course.
So gather your sculling pals, raise a few dollars to benefit Head Of The Charles endowment, and put on your fanciest rowing duds. Oh, and be sure to row with your best face forward, to look good for the cameras.
